There are so many gifts that you can buy your mother for mothers day, but I thought I would add a few suggestions here to help you decide. Based on my past history and my mother’s reactions to her gifts, I would say I have done fairly well.

bird houses and seeds
a clock to remind her that “all through time, you will love her”
bulbs for planting in a garden which you offer to help with
lunch or dinner reservations
a spa day
wind chimes
a night at a bed and breakfast
jewelry
a mothers ring
a homemade card

If these ideas do not work, you can always resport to the old standby of flowers. Even if you simply call up 1800flowers, remember, she is your mom and she will love it. But I say go ahead and take a few chances AND get her Mothers day flowers. She deserves it!

Mother’s Day Flowers Make WAHM’s Happy

I am a work-at-some mom (WAHM, for short). Yes, I can actually have the privilege of working in my pajamas as I tend to the daily routines of life and family. I feel privileged that I am able to have a career and still be at home with my family. We are a league of WAHM’s. We have traded in career gear for PJ’s and sometimes it can be frustrating. The benefits of working from home include not having to set an alarm at an unreasonable hour, not being glued to a Blackberry, and not having to deal with office politics. But there is a down side to working from home…

Working at home can create a disconnection between yourself and the outside world. As I sit hear, I am reminded that I have perhaps 25 suits and dress slacks from my former life. I looked nice in those items, yet I have no reason to wear them anymore. I also do not get some of the human connection between my former colleagues and I. All in all, it is a good gig to work from home, but it can be isolating. While I don’t need a lot of rewards, with Mother’s Day coming up, it would be nice to get some Mother’s day flowers.

I can only hope that my loved ones will think of me as I sit, blog, research, and type away at my keyboard. Will anyone remember to give me a nice big bouquet of flowers for Mother’s day? Will I get a reminder that I am first and foremost a WAHM because the mom part is most important? I certainly hope so. Not that I am expecting less, but I did leave a little reminder to my hubby by writing in the 1800flowers number on the refrigerator bulletin board. Hey Hubby! If you are reading this, get me some Mother’s day flowers!

Polo Playing Lawyers, Meet Mohammed Babangida

I must admit that I do not know much about Polo. I see the royals playing games of Polo in the UK, but other than that…Zip. Well, to be fair, I did watch Pretty Woman and I know about the divots. Polo seems to be an interesting sport to watch. The crowds of people dressed in their best watching beautiful horse glide up and down the grassy field. Mohammed Babangida seems to know Polo. He was also a pioneer legal officer with the Nigerian Agricultural Insurance Corporation and runs a law firm in Abuja. Hence, a Polo-playing lawyer.

Mohammed Babangida commented on the 2009 Polo Invitational in an interesting article on the sport. The event had an impressive showing, according to Babangida. Because of his expertise in the field of business, he was subsequently invited to a private brainstorming session and business meeting after the Polo match was over. Mohammed Babangida gave a hopeful comment on the business meeting stating there would be a lot of networking as a result of the meeting.

Getting a Remodel with K-Designers

I just got finished today with listening to another small-town contractor give me a bid on a new remodeling project I wanted done. The problem with small-town contractors are that most of them seem unprofessional. I get people who come in with no references, no license to show, and no idea how to make suggestions on the project I want done. I came across a website for K-Designers the other day and I thought…”Gee, why can’t they be in my local area?”

I did some searching and I found out that K-Designers has been in business since before I was born. That makes me happy since having experience tells me that these people know how to complete a project. I even went to their website at http://www.k-designers.com/home.asp and looked at some of their images of work completed. I was certifiably jealous at this point. They even have a custom design tool on their website. Why can’t someone on the East Coast have this kind of website? (K-Designersis in the Western half of the United States.)

Oh well, I guess I am off to check on the bids from my local contractors. Darn it!

Nachshon Draiman: Publicity Victim

When one looks to the internet, we often expect to automatically find the best search results on a given topic. In fact, when Googling a name, we expect relevant and pertinent information to be displayed. But such is not always the case. Take for instance the case of Nachshon Draiman. An entrepreneur in his field, this man was attacked by a negative publicity streak that has affected his career. Draiman is an expert in geriatric care facilities in Illinois. He is an active advocate for elder care an a member of the Illinois Council for Long Term Care. How does a man with a good reputation end up having bad search results in Google?

The answer for Nachshon Draiman lies in the quick ability for most anyone to smear a public reputation online. Blog upon blog can manipulate search results to the point where one man can become a target. In fact, Nachshon Draiman was attacked by his own brother. Any blogger out there can become a victim of bad publicity as the Draiman case reveals. My advice? Protect your identity online and Google your name often. Try contacting sites that represent you negatively, and if that does not work, legal action may be necessary.

Amos Tamam: TAXI!!!!

I blogged once before about Amos Tamam describing his Taxicab innovations all around the country. Basically, he allowed people to pay for a cab by a credit card using a Verifone system. If you are somewhere, and you yell **TAXI**, you no longer have to carry a huge wad of cash. If you are like me and have to ride in a cab often, you soon start to realize that the tolls can really add up. Who wants to be embarrassed by the idea of having too little money or (yike!) not enough tip. Amos Tamam took care of all of that. As a special added bonus, when I went to seach for his name again, I found it under a Chanukah celebration article that I found very interesting. The event was called the “Everyone Lights Together” celebration and Amos Taman was there along with the mayor.

I came across the neatest website today as I looked at a picture of Linus Gitahi in an African Leadership Initiative photograph next to a Rhinoceros. I was researching influential African men and women when I came across the site. The reason I needed to focus on people like Linus Gitahi was for Black History month in February. While February is a long way off, it pays to do the research for an important event well ahead of time. What impressed me most about Linus Gitahi was his leadership skills among the Kenyans. The country is poor and dying, but Mr. Gitahi seems to be rising above those problems.
